What Does an MEP Engineer Do During Construction?
During construction, an MEP engineer reviews submittals, answers RFIs, visits the site at key milestones, and helps resolve field conflicts so systems are installed as designed.

Why MEP support continues after drawings are issued
Design drawings describe intent. Construction is where duct transitions, panel locations, equipment substitutions, and field conditions appear. An MEP engineer's construction-phase role is to help the team install systems that match the permitted design.

Submittal review
Contractors submit shop drawings and equipment data for approval. The MEP engineer reviews submittals to confirm:
- Equipment matches specified performance
- Electrical and control connections align with the design
- Substitutions do not create capacity, code, or coordination problems
This is especially important on HVAC replacements, generator additions, and medical gas work.
RFIs and clarifications
Requests for Information (RFIs) arise when the field team needs clarification. The engineer answers questions about drawing intent, code paths, and acceptable alternates—ideally before rework is required.
Site observations
Periodic site visits focus on milestones such as:
- Underground and rough-in installation
- Major equipment delivery and setting
- Above-ceiling coordination before close-in
- Pre-functional and startup support
On commercial renovations, existing conditions often appear only after demolition—site observations help catch those issues early.
Punch list and closeout
Near the end of construction, the engineer may support punch-list review, system verification, and turnover documentation. On projects with commissioning, this overlaps with functional testing.
What construction administration does not include
Construction administration is not general contractor management. The engineer does not direct trade labor, schedule subcontractors, or guarantee installation quality—that remains the contractor's responsibility.
